Hustle & Float explores the 3 forces (Systems, Stories, & Self) that influence our work belief. Here are some of the questions from the 3S discussion guide to get you started .
Spend some time on these, and don’t rush. Try asking yourself one of the questions in the morning, and then seeing what you answer is a few hours later, or the next day. Often, the answers come to us in stages, especially when it comes to our own beliefs and narratives.
How do my friends and I talk about our work?
How does working make me feel?
What roles do fear and competition play in my standards of working? (Hint: technology is often a proxy for an underlying fear that if you take a break, you won’t keep up.).
What meaning, if any, do I truly derive from the work that I do? (Hint: no right or wrong answer.)
Going back to the age when I chose my career, what drove my choice? What did I imagine doing, wanting, achieving? How does that differ from where I am today?
How do I represent my professional identity to the outside world? How does this serve me?
How do I define success?
In what ways do I communicate or signal my work ethic? Where did I learn this?
What did my parents teach me about work and success?
What behaviors are rewarded or well-regarded in my workplace?
Who are the people I admire? What about them do I hold in high esteem?
